What is Equitable Development?

Development and growth do not have to be dirty words. A better, more equitable future is possible only when we start working together to proactively build the change we want to see in our neighborhoods.

Prevent
Displacement

Help long-time residents stay rooted through home-ownership and wealth-building strategies that benefit future generations.

Preserve
Community

Ensure the history, culture, and identity of our neighborhoods is reflected in and elevated by every development decision.

Empower
Neighbors

Center community voice throughout the development process, with meaningful input and tangible benefits at every stage.

Affordable
Options

Include affordable housing in mixed-income developments, with a focus on households earning 30–80% of Area Median Income (AMI).

Environmentally
Sustainable

Prioritize energy efficiency and renewable sources, along with green space, native landscaping, and access to healthy food.

Inclusive
Opportunities

Intentionally open doors to business and real estate ownership for people historically excluded from economic growth.

Enhanced
Quality of Life

Build neighborhoods where people can live, work, and play without a car, with walkability and everyday amenities close to home.

Transparent
Processes

Give the community ongoing access, insight, and a genuine say in how decisions are made and tradeoffs are evaluated.

What does equitable development
look like in reality?

  • Helping seniors leverage their property to build in rental income so they can age in place
  • Working with a religious organization to use their land to build affordable & workforce housing
  • Delivering missing middle housing so that more families can own property and build wealth
  • Converting small rental properties with stable tenants into cooperatively owned housing
  • Incorporating gardens for healthy food and green energy to reduce environmental impact
  • Supporting buy back the block efforts for community control of land and property
